Proverbs 4:23
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
This is just like what I’ve been thinking about all week with the theme of your heart becoming the story of your life.
So I’ve been thinking about the theme of my heart and purposefully SETTING the theme as I spend time with God each day. But this verse emphasizes that though you can set the theme, it can EASILY be OFFSET, so we have to guard our hearts.
What offsets a good theme?
1. Corrupt/perverse speech (v. 24)
The words that come out of our mouth show us what’s really in our hearts. But also listening to others’ corrupt speech will get into my heart- gossip, bitterness, complaining, negativity, etc- all destroy a good theme.
2. No Goals/Focus (v. 25-27)
These verses command us to put our focus straight ahead & don’t get sidetracked, for US to MARK OUT a straight path for our feet. This is looking to the future, prayerful goal-setting. Without clear focus & purpose, our heart’s theme EASILY becomes OFFSET by the many distractions the enemy will offer us.
We guard our hearts by guarding our focus. It’s so important to have a godly schedule and not too much free time. Boredom leads us to sin!

Good points to remember…thanks! Happy 4th!
